Shang Palace (香宫) is the premier Chinese restaurant of Shangri-La Far Eastern, Taipei featuring fine Cantonese cuisine prepared by its team of professional chefs from Hong Kong.
Shang Palace offers an elegant dining setting in a modern Chinese design inspired by celestial clouds and peony flowers while keeping traditional Chinese design elements such as lattice panels in black and gold.
We started our meal with Steamed Shrimp Dumplings with Water Chestnuts. I love this version of har gow because of the water chestnuts that add a crunchy consistency that contrasts the tender and plump shrimps. The water chestnut also gave a refreshing taste to this dumpling.
To warm up our tummy, we had the Stewed Chicken Bone with Matsutake and Fish Maw. This soup dish had a light flavor of chicken with hints of earthy flavor from the mushroom. The soup comes with chunks of chicken, matsutake mushroom, and fish maw, each having its own texture and flavor perfectly blended in the broth.
Shang Palace is famous for its Roasted Duck which is among the best you can find in Taipei. Their roasted duck was expertly prepared in-house by the restaurant's Cantonese chefs, keeping the traditional flavor and texture of the skin and meat.
Guests who order the Roasted Duck will enjoy the dish served two ways. First, the roasted duck will be carved by the chef in equal portions, each consisting of a slice of meat with attached skin.
The sliced roasted duck will be served with Chinese pancakes (original or wheat), spring onions, sliced cucumber, and hoisin sauce.
The bones and the remaining meat of the Roasted Duck are then cooked into a congee. The congee is served with a variety of toppings including scallions, peanuts, fried breadstick (you tiao).
We also sampled some of the premium items from the menu such as the Wok-fried Conch and Vegetables with XO Sauce. Conch can look almost like squid but conch has a more tender taste that is easier to the bite. The sauce has a lightly spicy taste that went well with the flavorful conch and is complemented by the natural sweetness of the vegetables.
Another premium item we tried was the Braised Australian Short Ribs with Spices Sauce. The beef was super tender and was beautifully marinated in aromatic spices. The bell peppers were sweet and crunchy. A light gravy was added and enveloped the dish in a silky and creamy sauce.
For dessert, we had the Steamed Buns with Sesame Paste. The buns were shaped into mushrooms with bamboo charcoal used to create the scale design of the mushroom cap. The buns are filled with sweet sesame paste.
Finally, as per tradition, we ended our meal at Shang Palace with their signature Chilled Mango Sago Cream with Pomelo. I heard that Taiwan has equally good quality mangoes as the Philippines and Thailand which makes this version of dessert one of the best ones I tried so far.
