1867 is the lobby lounge and bar of Kyoto Yura Hotel - MGallery. It serves coffee, tea, light snacks, classic and innovative cocktails, local and international liquors and premium Japanese whiskeys. 1867 is an ideal meeting place for afternoon tea with friends and family or pre-dinner cocktails for couples or groups of friends.
During my visit, I was able to try some of the signature cocktails of 1867. I was particularly interested in their most recommended cocktails and drinks which are mixed with local ingredients that you don't normally see in classic cocktails.
The first cocktail I tried was the Lady in Bloom which is a mixture of Absolut Kurant Vodka (coconut oil fat washed), elderflower liqueur, Manuka honey, apple juice, lemon juice, ginger ale, and sea salt spray. It is then garnished with orange peel, fresh thyme, and flower petals. This is the most recommended drink from the cocktail menu and is a very safe choice because of its not too complex flavors.
The next cocktail I tried was the Maiko which is a mixture of Kyoto Tofu, Amaretto, local special milk, simple syrup, and lemon juice. It is then garnished with slices of dried strawberry. Tofu is a local specialty in Kyoto and I find it amazing how they were able to perfectly blend this ingredient in a cocktail drink. The taste of the tofu was very subtle and its creamy taste perfectly blends with the nutty flavor of the Amaretto. This makes for a perfect dessert cocktail.
Lastly, I had the Kyoto Yura Gin & Tonic which is made with Ki No Bi Kyoto Dry Gin (a local craft gin), Uji matcha powder, Yuzu syrup, tonic water, and garnished with dried orange and sprinkles of gold powder. Kyoto is synonymous with matcha so this drink. Matcha-based drinks in Kyoto tend to be on the bitter side, so don't expect this to be a dessert cocktail. At first sip, you will immediately taste the rich matcha flavor which is then followed by the bitter yet aromatic flavors of yuzu.
In total there are 16 cocktail choices from the menu. Enjoy 50% off on 1867 original cocktails during Happy Hour which runs daily from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. 1867 is open daily from 11:30am to 12:00 midnight. The staff and the bartenders are very hospitable and can speak very good English.
