The Ramadan Buffet is an annual buffet offering at the Lemon Garden restaurant of Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur. The Ramadan Buffet, also called Iftar Buffet, is served every evening of the holy month of Ramadan, during which time Muslims will partake in an evening meal to mark the end of their daily Ramadan fasting.
The Ramadan Buffet at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur features an extensive selection of traditional Malay cuisine, including some of the popular classic Malay dishes as well as festive Malay dishes reserved only for special occasions.
The Ramadan Buffet also features a selection of Indian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, as well as non-pork Chinese dishes. The most popular among the locals is the Seafood Station which features a variety of fresh and cold seafood, as well as sushi and sashimi made with fresh premium fish.
The Ramadan Buffet at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur is popular among Malaysian families as well as ex-pats working in Kuala Lumpur. The Ramadan Buffet is also perfect for tourists who wish to experience the very best of Malay cuisine. Here are some of the dishes I tried when I traveled to Kuala Lumpur last year to experience the Ramadan Buffet at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur.
Curry Mee | Ramadan Buffet at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur |
Curry Mee (or Curry Laksa) is one of my favorite comfort food in Malaysia. Every time I eat in a buffet, I would normally begin with a hot bowl of curry mee. I particularly love the curry mee served here at Lemon Garden. It has a well-balanced broth, not bland, not too spicy, and not too salty.
Assorted Seafood & Sushi | Ramadan Buffet at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur |
As mentioned earlier, the Seafood Station is the favorite among the locals. The queue can really get quite long, but there are instances when there is no queue, just like when I got the chance to get some items. My plate includes steamed scallops and crayfish, as well as an assortment of sushi.
Ketupat & Satay | Ramadan Buffet at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur |
One of the very simple yet very delicious Malay dishes I tried were the Chicken Satay and Beef Satay served with a rich peanut sauce. During Ramadan and Hari Raya, Satay is traditionally paired with Ketupat, which is a type of compressed steamed rice cut into bite-size cubes.
Lamb Biryani & Assorted Curries | Ramadan Buffet at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur |
Two of the premium dishes featured during my visit were the Roasted Whole Lamb and Lamb Biryani. I also got a variety of Malaysian and Indian chicken, beef, and mutton curries to pair with the Lamb Biryani.
Assorted Kuih | Ramadan Buffet at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur |
For dessert, I got to try four varieties of Malaysian Kuih, or rice cakes. I love Kuih Lapis so I got three different ones, plus I also got a Kuih Talam Pandan. Kuih is best paired with coffee.
Ice Kacang | Ramadan Buffet at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur |
I also tried to make my own Ice Kacang, which is a Malaysian dessert consisting of shaved ice topped with a variety of sweetened ingredients, palm sugar syrup, and coconut milk.
There were so many more dishes to try, I wish I could have tried some of the Chinese and Middle Eastern dishes, but I was already so full that evening. Nonetheless, my craving for Malaysian cuisine was satisfied. The Ramadan Buffet at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur is definitely one of the best reasons to visit Kuala Lumpur.
